Adaptation of digestive enzymes to dietary protein, carbohydrate and fibre levels and influence of protein and carbohydrate quality in Penaeus vannamei larvae (Crustacea, Decapoda) ArchiMer
Le Moullac, Gilles; Van Wormhoudt, A; Aquacop, Aquacop.
Activity of digestive enzymes (trypsin, chymotrypsin and amylase) was studied in relation with food in Penaeus vannamei larvae first stages. Microparticles containing casein involved the decrease of soluble protein content and enzyme activities. Specific trypsin activity but not chymotrypsin was correlated (p<1%) to casein level between 10 and 60% in microparticles. Cellulose fibres in food seemed to have little effect on digestive enzymes. Starch, between 1 and 20% in microparticles, had no influence on specific amylase activity. The effect of different feeding conditions were also tested on growth. No clear relationship between growth and enzyme is established since only trypsin is concerned in the case of a casein dose effect in the food. The protein...

Taris, Nicolas; Sauvage, Christopher; Batista, Frederico; Baron, Sophie; Ernande, Bruno; Haffray, Pierrick; Boudry, Pierre.
Previous studies have shown heritable variation in larval developmental traits in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. In order to study the genetic consequences of production of oyster larvae in hatcheries, two factors, specific to hatcheries, were examined: the effect of discarding the smallest larvae (i.e. culling) and the effect of temperature (20°C versus 26°C). A mixed-family approach was used in order to infer the genetic composition of larval populations and family assignment, limiting possible environmental bias and allowing the study of a relatively large number of families using a limited number of larval tanks. Our results show that three multiplexed highly polymorphic microsatellite markers are a powerful tool for family assignment and,...

ArchiMer
Taris, Nicolas.
In order to study the genetic influence of intensive production of the larval stage in commercial hatcheries, two types of specific selective processes were examined: the effects of discarding the smallest larvae and temperature. A mixed-family approach was used in order to infer the genetic composition of the larvae. The results show that our mixed-family approach, combined with microsatellite-based family assignment, is a powerful tool for the study of bivalve larvae genetics. Selective sieving is an advantageous practice at a phenotypic scale, but also represents a substantial risk for diversity loss. The culled larvae are important for the minimization of the variability in reproductive success and the maximization of broodstock genetic diversity....

Samain, Jean-francois; Cochard, Jean-claude; Chevolot, Lionel; Daniel, Jean-yves; Jeanthon, C.; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Marty, Y.; Moal, Jeanne; Prieur, D.; Salaun, Michele.
Some positive growth differences can be observed, all year long, in Pecten maximus larvae cultivated in an old fishpond, compared with the water which flows into it periodically. These waters are filtered at 1 µm through CUNO cartridges. Moreover, the larvae are cultivated in the same light, temperature and food (cultured phytoplankton) conditions. This difference is significant in terms of larvae size, dry weight, organic matter, ashes, total proteins, glycogen, and lipids. A series of preliminary observations on the chemical composition of these two waters after filtration (amino acids, fatty acids, organic mater, nutritive salts), on the bacterial flora (total, heterotrophic organisms, vibrio), on the particular material using electron microscopy, on...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Polsenaere, Pierre; Le Moine, Olivier.

Quiniou, Francoise; Blanchard, Michel.
An area located between the Mont-St-Michel Bay and Jersey was monitored from 1984 to 1985. Limpet densities have been evaluated through quantitative sampling and underwater video. At the same time, some planktonic samplings have enabled the monitoring of the evolution of larval abundances. Maxima, planktonic and benthic density areas superpose each other. Moreover, the study of the populations shows that the number of young colonies is increasing, thus clearly indicating that Crepidula fornicata populating is booming in the Norman-Breton gulf.

Robert, Rene; Miner, Philippe; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Mazuret, Michel; Connan, Jean-paul.
Larval mortalities occurring in molluscan hatcheries have often been associated with bacterial contamination. Although batches of oyster and clam larvae have been routinely reared in the hatchery of Argenton without antibiotics, high larval mortalities have been recorded with Pecten maxirnus under similar conditions. For this species, an addition of chloramphenicol was found necessary. However, this chemical has now been banned in Europe. Thus either substitition products or an improvement in the rearing procedures is essential. Studies carried out have shown that neither a decrease in larval density (1 larvae. ml"l) nor sea water change frequency (1 per day) had any positive effects. Furthermore, elective substances such as sugars were not suitable and...

Herpesviruses associated with mortalities among Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in France-Comparative study ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan; Le Deuff, Rose-marie; Cochennec, Nathalie; Maffart, Patricia.
Sporadic mortalities were reported in june and july of 1992 and 1993 among batches of hatchery-reared larval Pacifie oyster, Crassastrea gigas, and at the beginning of July and in August of 1993 among five batches of 3-7 month old young spats, C. gigas. Observations with transmission electron microscope showed the presence of herpes-like virus particles in infected larvae and young spats. The viruses observed in diseased larvae and affected young spat oysters were very similar. Elevated temperature and crowding may increase susceptibility of oysters to these herpes-like virus infections.

Joly, Jean-pierre; Bouget, Jean-francois; Hirata, Toshio.

Breuil, Gilles.
The sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, has been subjected to intensive aquaculture on the Mediterranean cost for ten years. Marine fish hatcheries are key factors in the aquaculture field, and face different pathologies, especially one of viral origin (nodavirus) that could challenge their feasibility. Consequently, we have tried to provide some data on larvae and spawning stocks. Firstly, we have studied the immunoglobulins, components of the specific humoral immunity, and their role as antibodies. On adult basses, these immunoglobulins are tetrameric molecules with high molecular weight (850 kD), made of heavy (H) - 80 kD and light (L) - 26 kD chains. In the eggs, simplest forms such as monomeric or dimeric are brought to the fore; they are located under...

Rico Villa, Benjamin.
Nowadays, spat production of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas relies on rearing techniques under controlled conditions in hatchery. In this context, an extensive research in aquaculture is necessary because larval development and metamorphosis are critical for hatchery management. Firstly, a diet consisted in a Haptophyceae: Isochrysis affinis galbana (clone T-ISO) and a Bacillariophyceae: Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum demonstrated its efficiency to supply the nutritional needs throughout the whole larval rearing. Then, a flow-through rearing system was developed and coupled with a continuous hydrobiological data recorder to provide basic information for ecophysiology research through different trophic levels and/or temperature throughout larval...

Metamorphosis and estuarine colonisation in the common sole, Solea solea (L.): implications for recruitment regulation ArchiMer
Amara, Rachid; Lagardere, Francoise; Desaunay, Yves; Marchand, Jocelyne.
Processes involved in both metamorphosis and settlement of young sole were studied at the population, cohort and individual level in order to evaluate their role in survival and recruitment regulation. Metamorphosis can be defined as a phase of variable duration (10 days on average) at the end of which the larval period of pelagic dissemination is completed. Size at the onset of metamorphosis is considerably less variable than age and is less plastic to environmental change. Metamorphosis is triggered by the acquisition of a competent size and a sufficient store of energy supplies, and occurs without a nutritional crisis or growth arrest. In addition, changes in organogenesis and behaviour that occur during metamorphosis seem to contribute to horizontal...

Nutrional inadequacy of Nannochloris atomus and Stichoccocucs bacillaris for the oyster Crassostre gigas (Thunberg) larvae ArchiMer
Robert, Rene.
The evaluation of Nannochloris atomliS and StichoccocllS bacillaris as nutrient sources for oyster larvae has been attempted in the present work. After a study of their grawth and size distributions, these two species were used as food for Crassostrea gigas larvae. Despite praper sizes (2.5 to 20 µm3) the larval development of Crassostrea gigas was poor. Evaluation of ingestion and digestion of both algae, by means of epifluorescence microscopy, on 2 day and 6 day old larvae showed that they were normally ingested but weakly digested. Consequently, their nutritional inadequacy for larval molluscs may be also related to their indigestibility.

Cochard, Jean-claude; Gerard, Andre.
The analysis of the Pecten maximus larval productions carried out between 1982 and 1986 in the framework of the repopulating program of the roadsted of Brest demonstrated the existence of a number of factors affecting larval growth in hatcheries: - Larval growth shows important seasonal fluctuations. It is minimal in February-March (3 to 4 µm.D-1) and maximal in June (6 to 8 µm.D-1). The growth of larvae from conditioned spawners does not differ from that of larvae from mature genitors collected in their natural habitat. Growth is favoured by an unknown factor present in sea water and held with a filtration of 0,2 µm. - The growth of the larvae cultivated in slack water in flat bottom ponds is higher than that of the larvae cultivated in bubbling water in...

Soletchnik, Patrick.
This study is based on catched larvae data base produced since C. gigas was first imported into the Charentais Sounds (late 1960s, early 1970s). The method for catching larvae using a towed net remained unchanged between 1950 and 1998. Four sites have been sampled in the Bay since 1970, two situated in the Seudre estuary and two in the middle of the Bay. Two other sites from near the mouth of the Charente River have been sampled since 1982. For each sample, oyster larvae were counted in four size classes, from the young larva (1-4 days) to near metamorphosis (16-20 days). Each year, 100 to 150 captures were carried out at all sample sites between June and September. Captures from July and August represent 99% of the total. The main variables were: capture...
